Differentiating cardiogenic from non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema in critically ill patients is notoriously difficult. Lung ultrasound is an excellent tool to diagnose pulmonary edema, but can it also differentiate between those two clinical entities? Using both basic and some more advanced ultrasound signs, lung ultrasound has the potential to become the gold standard for diagnosing the cause of pulmonary edema in critically ill patients.

What drives you?
My motivation in both clinical work and research comes from a genuine interest in people and pathophysiology. In addition, ultrasound is a great and non-invasive tool, which helps clinicians diagnose and monitor patients.
Why should the delegate attend your presentation?
ICU-physicians around the world struggle to differentiate cardiogenic from non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema. In my presentation, I will show them that lung ultrasound in a promising technique in this regard. Lung ultrasound signs of interest will be discussed.
What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
The first priority is to optimize image acquisition. After that, computer assistance in image interpretation will further enhance diagnostic accuracy.
What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
Making rapid bedside diagnosis using non-invasive tools will benefit patients
What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
Barriers can be devided in technical-, patient- and physician related, but all can be overcome in the near future
